Procreate – Smooth Lines

So, if I take a brush and start drawing, you will notice that your lines won’t be perfectly straight; instead, they will be a bit wobbly and shaky. Procreate has a few ways of making smooth lines, but in this article, I will show you how to do that using Stabilization and StreamLine.

How to make smooth lines

Step 1 – Go to Brush Studio

First of all, choose the brush you will be using. Then tap on that brush to go to Brush Studio, where you will modify some brush settings to make it run smoother.

Then go to Stabilization (second section) in the menu on the left. Under Stabilization, you will find features that help smooth strokes as you draw them, making hand-drawn lines straighter than they would naturally be.

Step 2 – Increase StreamLine

At the top, you will see StreamLine. StreamLine assists in smoothing out any wobbles or shakes in your line. It is helpful to all artists, particularly those who do inking and calligraphy.

Now, increase the Amount. I usually set it to anywhere between 60 and 90 percent, depending on the artwork I will be creating.

Step 3 – Increase Stabilization

Stabilization takes a moving average of a stroke and draws that on the canvas. The higher the Stabilization, the more it averages out the wobbles in a stroke, making strokes deliberately straighter.

As you increase the Amount of Stabilization, you will notice that it becomes harder to draw a wobbly line. No matter what you do, Stabilization tries to create a straight line.

If you set Stabilization too high, it would be hard to draw because all you would be able to create is straight lines. And that is why I suggest keeping Stabilization around 30%.

Step 3 – Increase Motion filtering

Motion filtering works similarly to Stabilization but uses more advanced algorithms. So, instead of smoothing out the wobbles, it deletes them, creating an even straighter line.

Just like with Stabilization, if you set Motion filtering too high, all you would be able to draw is straight lines. And that is why I would suggest keeping it at 10-20%.

Conclusion

And that is how you make smooth lines in Procreate using Stabilization.
